Explain[]
Why are they immortal? Why do they degrade with old age? Why do other races protect them?

Their immortality is just built into their anatomy. They degrade because they are like every other organism. And other species protect them because they are manipulative. I forgot to add that
So they manipulate other, more powerful empires into doing their bidding. Fascinating. Also, there's no biological explanation present for their immortality. Why do their chromosomes not degrade?

Don't be silly. Here's a line you could use:
Wolforum cells make copies of themselves in a manner slightly different from almost all other cells known to science. This difference prevents the slow degradation of the cells as they make copies of themselves over time.
